Acupuncture for Women's Health

Both Jane and Eileen, the acupuncturists at The Wellbeing Centre, have years of experience working with women in healthcare. They both trained as nurses before moving into midwifery and then acupuncture. Not surprisingly, they have a keen interest in treating pregnant women, as well as other aspects of women's health.

The British Acupuncture Council has published a Fact Sheet on Obstetrics. The most important finding was that acupuncture is safe. This summary of the research evidence concluded that acupuncture may; relieve pain (back pain, pubic pain, labour pain), promote spontaneous labour, improve mood and reduce anxiety, alleviate dyspepsia (digestive pain, nausea, heatburn, vomiting, bloating), and turn a foetus which is breech. Fact sheets are also available on specific women's health related topics including:
  • Childbirth,
  • Endometriosis,
  • Female fertility,
  • Infertility ART,
  • Menopausal symptoms,
  • PCOS,
  • Premenstrual syndrome,
  • Puerperium (postnatal period)
  • Urinary incontinence

The Affordable Acupuncture Clinic

Welcome to Hull and East Yorkshire Community Acupuncture run by Jane Marsh and Eileen Birrell. This is one clinic with two locations: The Wellbeing Centre in Market Weighton and the sister clinic in Hull, near Hull Royal Infirmary.

Alternative medicine can be costly. At Hull and East Yorkshire Community Acupuncture we are committed to keeping acupuncture affordable for all. We can achieve this by treating several people together in one room. Acupuncture needles need 20 – 30 minutes to do their work. The acupuncturist can place the needles in one patient, leaving them to relax into their treatment and move on to the next patient. By working in this way the price of a treatment is significantly reduced. Cheap acupuncture does not mean poor quality acupuncture. The standard of treatment in our clinics is of the same high standard you would expect in any private one to one clinic, but by keeping our overhead costs low we can pass those savings on to our patients.

Jane and Eileen both practice acupuncture based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and are registered with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). BAcC is the largest professional body in the UK for traditional acupuncturists and their members adhere to strict codes of safe and ethical practice. They are also members of the Asociation of Community and Multibed Acupuncture Clinics (ACMAC).

About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is based on Chinese Medicine principles that have been developed and refined over 2000 years. Acupuncture treats the whole person and balances our physical, emotional and spiritual energies to restore good health. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, the smooth flow of our vital energy can be disturbed by many factors including, physical and emotional stress, infections, injury, poor nutrition and environmental factors. When the flow of our vital energy is disturbed, ill health or pain result.

Acupuncture involves the use of fine needles, inserted into specific points on the body to balance the energy flow.

Good health is not just the absence of pain or disease.

Many people come to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom, pain or condition. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell but their doctor can find no obvious diagnosis. Others choose it to help maintain good health or just to improve their sense of well being.

Acupuncture is often thought of as a means of pain relief; it can in fact treat a wide range of conditions. The British Acupuncture Council www.acupuncture.org give information on a wide range of health problems where acupuncture can help, while the World Health Organisation list many conditions that acupuncture can treat.

Unlike conventional medicine, Traditional Chinese Acupuncture aims to treat the whole person not symptoms in isolation, treatment is aimed at the root cause. It can therefore be effective for a wide range of conditions and can be used alongside conventional medicine.

Please call 07909 075045 or 01430 803223 to make an appointment or to find out how acupuncture could help you. Or e-mail on heycommunityacupuncture@gmail.com
About Jane Marsh  BSc, MSc, MBAcC

Jane started her healthcare career in the NHS as a nurse 25 years ago before becoming a midwife. She worked in a variety of settings including humanitarian work in rural Africa and a midwifery led birth centre while pursuing her interest in Acupuncture.

Jane studied Traditional Chinese Medicine at The Northern College of Acupuncture in York for 3 years and was awarded a post graduate diploma in Acupuncture in 2007. She completed her MSc in Acupuncture with a research study looking at the use of acupuncture in pregnancy.

Since qualifying, Jane has also been involved in a research study looking at the treatment of depression using acupuncture.

Jane has an obvious interest in treating pregnant women as well as couples who are trying to conceive. She has undertaken post-graduate training in enhancing fertility with acupuncture as well as supporting IVF cycles.

About Eileen Birrell MBAcC, Dip Ac.

I graduated from The Northern College of Acupuncture in York, following a three year full time course taught at Masters level. Since qualifying in 2010, I have continued a program of professional development, attending seminars and workshops including supporting fertility using acupuncture, musculoskeletal problems and pain, and treating stress, anxiety and depression.

Before embarking on a career in acupuncture, I trained as a Nurse, qualifying in 1984, and then as a midwife in 1987, and latterly worked as a community midwife in the Pocklington, Market Weighton and Holme on Spalding Moor area between 1995 and 2012.

My decision to undertake the three year acupuncture course was based on my own personal experience of acupuncture and the belief that to treat illness we have to look at the whole person, treating the individual rather than the symptoms.

I am happy to combine all aspects of my health care knowledge and training to benefit my patients. As a member of the British Acupuncture Council I conform to the highest standards of safety and hygiene. The clinic is licenced with East Riding County Council.

In my spare time I enjoy walking – with 6 dogs! – I have a garden that usually gets the better of me and also enjoy the fascination of keeping bees.
